The Flyers have a long and illustrious history competing at the Australian Championships - the 'Nationals'. From the early days of the Flyers in Canberra through to this year, the Flyers have been there.

In 2010 in Adelaide, the Flyers set a number of personal and club records, on and off the water. Many of our new paddlers surprised themselves when they paddled their hearts out and set new personal bests. Although Dylan almost brought the team's reputation down.

This year is no different and the Flyers have their strongest contingent at the Nationals here in Canberra. Check out below for the latest information, and for a blow by blow description of the Flyers' exploits as they go into battle against Australi's best paddlers (and mascots).

The Wash Up

From the Flyers' First Lady President Teresa

Another hugely successful Australian Championships has come and gone and the Flyers have much to celebrate!

The Flyers entered their largest ever contingent - over 70 plus of us paddled, drummed, swept or administered proceedings. It was a glorious venue and the weather was perfect for a truly memorable event.

I want to congratulate everyone for a great 3 days of racing. Everyone looked to be having a fantastic time, in and out of the boats. Particular congratulations to:

  • GM women's team for their outstanding effort in bringing home silver (200m & 500m) and bronze (2km).
  • Prem Mixed 10's team for making their first ever grand final! - despite being pipped for 3rd in a tight race it was a great result.
  • The GM Mixed, GM Open and Prem Women's teams also performed well, again in a number of cases being pipped in tight finishes.

Many thanks to all those who helped get the Flyers to the championships and through the 3 days of racing on time and on form. A few special thanks need to go to:

  • Axel and John, who kept us all up to date with the races (particularly tricky when they were running up to 30mins ahead of schedule) and ensured we were marshalled and ready with paddles, bum mats and ID tags.
  • Fiona and Lyndy for their magnificent job with the food - I saw and heard more than a few other teams wander past the Flyers tent and look on in envy at our spread! Each day we were met with an assortment of fresh food and healthy snacks; water, juice and a revitalising cup of tea.
  • Stewart and Joe for managing the team registration and payment process - despite a large contingent and the changing race draw providing added challenges, every team was spot on.
  • Brim for donating her time to manage land sessions in the months leading up to the championships - we were fitter, stronger and have the results to prove it.
  • The Flyers volunteers who helped make the chmapionships the best ever! I saw Flyers faces everywhere - in the marshalling tent, at the start, helping with boat wrangling and everyone was happy and cheerful. Together with the other volunteers you all did a truly amazing job.
  • To everyone else who helped out, I thank you.

On behalf of the Flyers, I would also extend thanks and congratulations to the ACOC team who put together the Aus Championships.
