training...

Being a sport, Dragon Boating involves training. The Dragon Flyers get out on the water three times a week for their general training

The Canberra dragon boat fleet is situated at Lotus Bay, next to the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club.

Training sessions last for about one hour on the water and focus on paddling and racing technique. Dragon Flyers currently train from 5:45 - 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights and from 8:45 - 10am on Saturday.

Come along to as many as you are able. New paddlers are always welcome (see Info for Newbies page) but training times can sometimes vary so, if new, it's best to contact us beforehand. Current members will be notified via email of any changes.

A typical training sessions may involve any of the following:

  1. Aerobic - level 3 - 4, sustained paddling to develop fitness and endurance
  2. Technique - level 2, developing style and teamwork
  3. Racing - level 5 - 6, power and cohesion under race conditions
  4. Mixed grill - a bit of everything

The six levels of performance:

  1. very easy paddling, not concerned with technique, used as a warm up and warm down
  2. basic aerobic workout, emphasis on good technique, easy to sustain, builds endurance
  3. serious aerobic work, tiring but not over taxing, builds strength
  4. hard aerobic, very tiring, builds race conditioning
  5. maximum effort, exhausting, used sparingly, builds speed
  6. intense short burst exercises to simulate race starts, builds power
